Welcome to Norwegian Roads!

Today's journey takes us from Steinkjer to Grong, a route of 81 km (50.3 mi) along the European route E6. Steinkjer is a town located in the innermost part of Trondheimsfjord, in Trøndelag county, Central Norway. It serves as the administrative center of the municipality with the same name and is home to approximately 12,932 inhabitants.

Steinkjer

Steinkjer is crossed by the European route E6 highway and the Nordlandsbanen railway line, which runs from Trondheim to Bodø in the north. The town is divided into two parts, the Northern side and the Southern side, by the picturesque river Steinkjerelva.

The Coastal Highway - Fv17

At the junction in Asp, drivers have the option to continue north on Fylkesvei (County road) Fv17 instead of the E6. Fv17 is known as the "Kystriksveien" or the Coastal Highway. This scenic route follows the coastline, offering breathtaking views of fjords and islands along the way. It is part of the selected Norwegian Scenic Routes, which offer unique driving experiences.

European route E6

The E6 road is the longest road in Norway, spanning a total length of 3,058 km (1,900 mi). It connects northern and southern Norway, starting in Trelleborg, Sweden, and ending in Kirkenes, Northern Norway. Before 1985, the E6 even started in Rome, Italy. As we drive north on the E6, we pass by Snåsavatnet, Norway's sixth-largest lake, covering an area of 122 square kilometers (47 sq mi) and stretching approximately 40 km (25 mi) in length.

Grong

As we approach Grong, we can see the distinctive blue color adorning bridges, light poles, and other structures. Grong serves as the administrative center of the municipality with the same name and has a population of 1,089 in the center and 2,287 in the municipality as a whole. One notable feature of Grong is the Namsen river, considered one of the best Atlantic Salmon fishing rivers in Norway.

Conclusion

Driving from Steinkjer to Grong offers a glimpse of the stunning Norwegian landscape. Whether you choose to take the faster inland route on the E6 or the picturesque Coastal Highway, both options provide unique experiences. From the charming town of Steinkjer to the beautiful Snåsavatnet and finally arriving in Grong with its iconic blue structures and the renowned Namsen river, this journey on Norwegian roads is truly a delight.
